From Whence I Come

I come from limestone
from far-reaching pine trees that grow towards the clouds, and the river that runs through them
I come from dances of lovers, wit, and the laughter that ensues from both
I come from Hippies, Pioneers, Immigrants, and those who walked The Trail.
I come from kitten purrs, velvety equine noses that greet so gently, and cottontails that wiggle with delight
I come from humor, and grit, tears, and hearts, fighting for rights, but enveloped in love
I come from snow-capped mountain, bier halls, fiddlers, guitarists, Kansas tornadoes, and women who lift loads more than their weight
I come from men with big hearts, who love their community, and women who can punch harder than a UFC fighter
I come from gardeners, windmill makers, entrepreneurs, hummingbird whisperers, actors, and majorettes
I come from many cultures, a myriad of religions, numerous souls
I come from raindrops, sun rays, moon glow, and burning fires
I come from sailing ships, train tracks, VW vans, wheat fields, drum beats, salty ocean waves, and feathers
I come from giggles, and protests, skipping, and raised fists I come from cherry-red lipstick wearing bleached bombshells, dark-haired mysterious beauties, hunters, artists, and wild men
I come from outlaws, and lawmakers, boots, and rufflesI come from water color teachers with curly hair, and women who loved one another as much as they loved my 9 year old self
I come from dancing queens and gender benders, life and death struggles of folks others had thrown away, and sequins that move with each groove
I come from “Rock Lobster”, “Easy Feeling”, “It’s a Man’s World”, “Milk Cow Blues”, “Natural Woman”, and “Time Warp”
And, I come from the wind in the trees, wildflowers, hawk calls, and Spring
I come from me.
