BARE BONES

The bones of a tree
Don't fear intimacy
Skeletons baring their cores
They want something more

Flaunting flawed branches
Tall, short, old and broken
They know what moves them
But trees don't have emotions

They could be crying
They could live in shame
They could be dying
Eyeing other trees in vain

Who cares about skeletal trees?
They are just as beautiful
Bare your hearts, winter is here
Gasping for real love and truth

Come out of hibernation
Magic waits for those who see
Frozen lakes, twirls on blades
Freedom sits, saving you a seat

The frigid, flawed season
Wintertime is my favorite
Truth is the very reason
Winter brings my soul to life

March 25, 2019. Emerald Necklace trail, Boston. One of my favorite spots, just so beautiful. It surrounds an “urban wild” area called the Back Bay Fens. A few waterways, islands with tall grass, cute little bridges, ducks, geese, dirt paths.

  1. Stunning! Definitely my favorite that you’ve shared thus far.
It is so viscerally, and visually stimulating.
The first stanza really jumps off the page.

  2. ohhhhh Dawn…such deep meaning that seeps into every fiber of my being. Thank you for your gift of poetry! The line “Skeletons baring their cores – They want something more” how often do we wish to bare our souls hoping someone sees, loves, embraces or sometimes just even acknowledges us. Then you tie this with a bow by baring our hearts in winter. 👏😁😍

  3. See, you do it again. Don’t like winter. Very little positive to say about it. I always find the bare trees dull compared to spring and fall. Now. Now you have me looking in a different light. Thinking about it all in a different way. Spring has always been rebirth, Fall is change. Now I excitedly await the trees of winter. Of Boston. And of more you will share and say. Thank you for this.
