Shine on My Texas Sun

I had intended to post this back during the super hot days of summer, and the lyrics have been sitting here since then. Well, we are kind of having a “second summer” here in November, so I guess now is as good a time as any! (and thanks to Dana for the prodding!)

If you know me, then you know that I have a “Sunshine Obsession” (say that 3 times fast!). I’ll explain more about that in another post. But I wrote these lyrics many years ago (probably 35-40 years ago) inspired by going fishing with my husband at Decker Lake in Austin during our early years together.

I tried lots of different tunes/styles and finally in the last few years turned this into a lazy, slow 12 bar blues tune. I couldn’t really play the blues yet, so I took it to my band and said, “Hey I have a new song. Start playing the blues really slow in the key of A.” And they did. They played and I sang along. I discovered if you have a dream to write a song, you can always write one with the 12 bar blues progression. The band already knows how to play it!

Some day, I’ll figure out how to get a recording on here, but for now, read it in a slow, lazy, carefree way!

“SHINE ON MY TEXAS SUN”

  1. Sittin’ here

    in the shade

    of an old mesquite tree.

    It must be

    a hundred degrees,

    Maybe more.

Well I got quite a deal

    on my rod and reel

    from a city store.

2. Don’t know how long

I’m gonna stay.

Seems like nothin’s

hittin’ today.

But it’s okay,

Yeah, it’s okay.

‘Cos I don’t care anyway.

I’m just havin’ fun

under my Texas Sun

Shine on.

Chorus:

So shine on my Texas Sun

Shine ….. down on me.

Oh, Shine on, my Texas Sun

Shine…. down on me.

Cos I’m just havin’ fun

Under my Texas Sun

Shine  on.

3. Sittin’ here,

not a hint of a breeze,

I find myself wonderin’

Just one day, one day of ease

I find my mind wanderin’

Back over the years of my life,

I’m just sittin’ here,

Sittin’ here, ponderin’.

Chorus:

So shine on, my Texas Sun

Shine ….. down on me.

Oh, Shine on, my Texas Sun

Shine…. down on me.

Cos I’m just havin’ fun

Under my Texas Sun,

You know I’m havin’ fun

Under my Texas Sun,

C’mon, let’s have some fun

Under my Texas Sun…….

Sittin’ here

in the shade

of an old mesquite tree.
