Lessons Learned in Maine Thus Far
Maine is different. You could say it’s the polar opposite of Texas…pun intended!
Here is what I have learned since we have arrived:
*Mainers are friendly. Don’t let anyone tell you that Yankees aren’t friendly…yes, Massholes do exist…but up here everyone is friendly.
*Maine time is like being on island time…everything is “ish” in time…5ish, 2ish..even if your appointment is 2 o’clock.
*No one gets in a hurry…no one. However, if they notice that you are behind them, they politely pull over so that you can go on your merry way!
*Most Mainers use reusable shopping bags and they always return their shopping carts to the proper place…no random cart in a parking spot.
*If you are expecting snow and your car is parked outside, make sure to stick your windshield wipers out…front and back…so that you can easily remove the snow and if there’s ice your wipers don’t get stuck to your windshield.
*You get cash back for your recycled bottles and cans…thanks Clynk.
*The sunrises and sunsets are out of this world beautiful. The cotton candy colored sky can’t be beat.
*A traffic jam is having to wait for more than 3 cars…in the winter…tourists season is a different story.
*There are hidden gems everywhere, you just have to pay attention. Not literal gems, but hidden spots you might miss if you were rushing around.
*Everyday you’ll see wildlife…it could be a deer family, a bunch of turkeys, a red fox, a gray squirrel or even a bunny…in the harbor you could see seals playing, puffins looking for food, and Loons out for a swim…you could even see an eagle family floating on the breeze, a crow or two and seagulls flying by.
*Binoculars are a must.
*Watching the tide come and go is not only interesting but very relaxing.
*It is the absolute best place to write. There’s peace here and that peace helps clear out the junk and you can focus on getting it all out on the page.
*Snow plow guys don’t get paid enough. Even when they show up at 4am!
*Layers are a necessity.
*Watching the snow is one of the most calming things I have encountered here.
*I love seeing my FIL a lot!
*Watching my husband and my FIL together makes my heart smile.
*Schools have a mid-winter break the third week of February.
*You can be as involved as you want to be.
We’ve only been here 11 weeks. I am sure I will continue to learn more about life here and I will of course update the list!
Peace and blessings to you and yours!
