Dad’s Song

by Christal Casey-Moore

Story behind the song:

I wrote Dad’s Song a while back. This song came about because I jokingly told my mom I would put what my dad would tell us as kids into a song……. and I eventually did.

My dad passed July 11, 2010. I wanted to write a song for him once I got into songwriting. I did not start writing songs till 2016 when I started to learn guitar. This song was probably a year into my songwriting.

My dad was a jokester and always trying to trick me and the whole family into believing something he had made up. One of these “jokes” was pulling up to the railroad track just as the arms went down to wait on the train and he would say, “the _______(insert current time of waiting on train) is right on time”. So if it was 10:00 he would say, “the 10 o’clock is right on time”. As a kid, I believed everything he would tell me and fell into that gullible category! I couldn’t believe he knew when all the trains were coming! Ha! And so, this became the first verse: “The 7:09 is right on time just like the 6:04 that came before…”

The other lyrics (listed below) includes his smoking (I can still smell the cigarette smoke when I return to my childhood house), him praying, leaving notes on my car, getting up early to go to pour cement, a hard worker, all for us.

We grew up in Amarillo where the weather is hotter than hot in the summer and the winter’s are brutal. He worked in that west Texas wind that will burn your legs with sand in the summer and blow ice right through you in winter.

We miss him everyday. Here in San Marcos where I live now, “I hear that whistle blowing by my window it’s like you’re stopping by to say hello”….”you lovingly haunt me”……

Title: Dad’s Song
Lyrics:
The 7:09 was right on time
Just like the 6:04 that came before
I hear the whistle blowing right by my window
It’s like your stopping by to say, “Hello”
You lovingly haunt me
You lovingly haunt me
You oooo, oooo lovingly haunt me
Cigarette smoke seeping through the walls
Your wind chime chiming, chiming down the hall
4 am prayers I do recall
Notes you left on my car reminding me to call
You lovingly haunt me
You lovingly haunt me
You oooo, oooo lovingly haunt me
Rising before the sun begins
Cement dust on your weathered skin
Blistering sun burning down on you
The winter wind that blows right through you
Working till your fingers bled
All for us and our daily bread
You lovingly haunt me
You lovingly haunt me
You oooo, you lovingly haunt me
Yooooooooouuu
