Dreamers

I wrote this song in early 2018 when DACA recipients were at risk of being deported; I’m still hoping the premise of the song will become obsolete.

DREAMERS

Last night, I had a dream where they’re in hot pursuit

I scramble through the brambles in the deep piney woods

I hide in a cave that I found long ago

And watch as the ICE men run past me below

From the beginning I’ve called Texas home

The only home that I’ve ever known

Raised near these piney wood forest of trees

Dreaming big dreams of what I want to be

They won’t find me today, they won’t find me tonight

And I won’t leave my home without a fight

But I worry as darkness slips into night

Am I watching my dreams fade from sight?

Dad was a dreamer, but worked hard all his life

Came to East Texas with 2 kids and a wife

Turned this red mud into pastures of green

Showed me what you can do when you follow your dream

They call us the dreamers, they say “send them back home”

Back to a place that we’ve never known

Don’t you see, you’re no different than me

We all have a right to our dreams!

I made it through college while working 2 jobs

They said I was smart but I worked really hard

I did all I could – I played by the rules

Now I’m a teacher in one of your schools

They call us the dreamers, they say “send them back home”

Back to a place that we’ve never known

Don’t you see, you’re no different than me

We all have a right to our dreams!

We live in your town; we work in your stores

We go to your church, and we fight in your wars

Yes, we’re part of your community

Why is this so hard for you to see?

Why is this so hard for you to see?

They call us the dreamers, they say “send them back home”

Back to a place that we’ve never known

Don’t you see, you’re no different than me

We all have a right to our dreams!

  1. You are officially a worthy contributor 😍!! Thanks for sharing your amazing and empathetic insight and soul with us here, and with those who will see it. Thanks for being brave enough to put it out there. You are indeed making the world a better place, and it’s my great joy to be able to have a spot so others can be blessed by your spirit. LYS cindilou and welcome!!

  2. CindiLou, I LOVE this. If love to hear it with the music someday. Welcome to LYS. I look forward to getting to know you.

  3. Yay for you!! Your post makes me a little braver. I have so many ideas- trying to figure out where to start! Maybe I’ll start with one of my songs like you did!! LYS!🌅🌞

  4. Wow. This is powerful and much needed. The cloud of misinformation that some people carry about dreamers always breaks my heart. They need our voices to amplify theirs. Thanks for doing just that.

  5. Such a compelling, and beautifully powerful piece.
I love how this pitches the reader, tosses up, and down, then sideways. The perspective, the beat, and rhythm are stirring, and they
keep this moving quickly, like the lives of the Dreamers, and the ever-changing laws/regulations/decisions.
I agree with Kara – “They need our voices to amplify theirs.”, Thank you!!

    1. Thanks April! I wrote this in Jan 2018 after a speech was made against the case for the Dreamers, stating “Americans are dreamers too.” I just couldn’t imagine going to work/school not knowing if “they” are coming for your or one of your family members! I truly hope the time has come to settle this the right way once and for all!

  6. I remember hearing you sing this on the porch at OYOU a couple of years back. It touched me then, and it touches me now. Thank you for putting words to something that was weighing heavy on my heart. .
