Telling Our Stories
It’s probably an understatement to say that 2020 has been challenging. This spring, as students graduated from high school and college during atypical ceremonies, I had the opportunity to write a poem for a group of young people as they moved on to the next phase of their lives. Perhaps I’m drawing on the encouragement I received at that age from people who helped me believe I could take the next step.
Your Story
You will turn pages
and advance through chapters of your life
where you come across stories of
such breathtaking joy
that you cannot believe how loved you are.
And you will encounter narratives of such sorrow
that your knees will buckle in grief.
Your job is to keep reading
Do not strive for certainty
or see life as black or white
Find the middle way
Hold all your stories gently
and with hope.
I love this. This is truth. It’s the first thing I read today and the timing is perfect. Beautiful. LYS
Truth, such beautifully heartfelt truth.
